Multiple World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen has set a new, amazing world record on a snowy road in Finnish Lapland. He drove the Valtra T234 tractor to the maximum speed of 130.165 km/h (80.88mph) !
The Valtra T234 was equipped with Nokian Hakkapeliitta TRI winter tyres (440 / 80R28 151D and 540 / 80R38 167D). The Finnish tyre manufacturer Nokian Tyres, which is considered as the inventor of the winter tyre, is known for their tyre range for extreme conditions. Last year, Nokian Tyres launched the Hakkapeliitta TRI as the world’s first winter tyre for tractors. The Hakkapeliitta TRI winter tires are characterized by an innovative block tread pattern with edges that enables firm grip on snow and ice.
The world record took place on February 19th as part of tire tests on the emergency airfield of Vuojärvi. The aim of the tests was to demonstrate the performance of the tire: “Testing at the extremes is at the core of activities and it requires unique skill,” said Tero Saari, Project Manager, R&D for Nokian Tyres.
The world record attempt, defined by the Guinness World Records organization, was located on a 2,300-meter snow strip with a 50-meter long speed trap at the middle. Driver Juha Kankkunen said: “I have done top speed tests earlier with several cars. This was the first time with a tractor, and we immediately got a world record! The tires and tractor worked really well, even though the weather was challenging.”
Even before this new World Record, Nokian Tyres was already the holder of record for the fastest car on ice. In 2013, test driver Janne Laitinen reached a speed of 335.713 km/h on the ice of the Gulf of Bothnia in Finland. The car was outfitted with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tyre.
